Amadeus (1984)
Mr.H told me that this film is like if The Prestige didn't fumble the ending (i liked the ending of the Prestige but whatever.) I can for sure see elements of the Prestige in this film but i think the ending was even more confusing than it. There was no real explanation. I mean i understand the concept that Salieri killed Mozart, but its not really clear to me how he does. Does he work him to death? did he drive him insane with the whole masked guy asking for a funeral song thing? i really dont know. I also dont think this can really be compared to the Prestige. its a movie about revenge for sure, there are elements reflected in both films but the one sidedness of the revenge in this film is a major disconnect for me. I think the one sided revenge adds a lot to this story. it shows how consuming jealousy is and i think it depicts Salieri getting absorbed by the jealousy and letting it drive him insane, even after Mozart is dead. however, it is not the same one upping, escalating horrible revenge that was depicted in the Prestige
This might just be a me thing, but the old Salieri scared me. like why was he so terrifying??? I think it was how red his eyes were, he was just hard to look at. its the same with the innkeepers in Les Mis, like theres nothing inherently wrong with how he looks, its just off-putting enough to be so unsettling. Also the dialogue confused me a bit. One second they were talking like they were in the time period and the next they were talking casually like it was modern day, it just didnt make a whole lot of sense. i would understand if it was a modern adaptation but its not? so i really just dont love that. it kind of ripped me out of the movie at times because it was so unlike the time period.
The plot of this film was really interesting. i saw that it was a movie about mozart i was... discouraged about how interesting this movie could really be. But i was very absorbed for the whole film. i wasnt really rooting for either person during the flashbacks. it was weird. when it was the confessional i felt bad for Salieri and was anti mozart, but when it was the flashback, i was oddly neutral. i mean Mozart is insufferable at times but overall hes a chill dude. I think the reason i felt bad for him at times was because of how annoying his wife was. speaking of his wife. was was the scene with her and Salieri necessary? it literally never came up again. it had zero impact on the plot whatsoever. One thing that i did like was how Salieri traveled through his relationship with god through Mozart. It was really interesting to see him go from his very in depth vow to god to literally murdering someone for fame. Overall i really liked this film, i mean it has some plotholes (but i could just be confused) and some odd moments but the flow was really digestible and i found all of it very interesting i would for sure recommend.
Yeah, the escalation is kind of one-sided. I suppose it's not EXACTLY The Prestige, but they share a lot of the same bones.
