Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy? An Animated Conversation with Noam Chomsky (2013)
Ive never seen anything even close to this movie before. It's a weird juxtaposition that the video is so visually stimulating but the actual content is more monotone and like listening to a podcast. The visuals are phenomenal. i like how bright and unrealistic the colors of the drawings are while being placed over a black and white photo
the message that this film is sending is weirdly hard to pick out. You would think it would be easy to pick out the message since they are literally jsut talking the whole time. its literally a conversation. But its actually a little hard to pick out. I think i struggled because this is clearly a conversation between 2 very smart people and people who know a lot about a very specific niche. Which i am not. So i think some of these concepts go a little over my head.
What i did pick up was that this film is very focused on Chomsky's philosophy, how he formed it, and what his opinions are on other philosophies. Its about understanding the world you live in, How life experiences form our philosophies and our interpretations of language and social interaction.
Overall this film is celebrating the great mind of Noam Chomsky and makes a case that the mid knows less and we grow but the mind never stops asking questions.
I did some extra research of Chomsky and his theory and what i got was that his theory is that all languages have the same rules and structures (universal grammar). It says that langauge has universal factors and principles that span multiple languages, they have specific options and limits for varitation and grammar and features between languages.
My opinion of the movie is that its a little boring. Its visually stimulating sure and i think that the things that Chomsky is talking about makes a lot of sense and is very thought provoking. I think i would understand and appreciate this film a lot more if i had a more in depth understanding of philosophy and his concepts. Noam Chomsky is an extremely brilliant person and i can tell that he makes some great points but he uses so many 5 dollar words that these concepts go over my head a little bit. If i take a philosophy class in college, i will have to re watch this movie. I think as of now, my film brain is a little too immature to properly appreciate this movie, because as of now i prefer movies to have a little more plot than this movie has. This is a bit more of a podcast. which to be fair i knew going into it. so i guess thats on me.
Chomsky is tough. I applaud you for challenging yourself a bit.
