To The Bone (2017)
TW: eating disorders
Ok so disclaimer, Ive personally never struggled with something like this so I am for sure ignorant on the actual disorder part of it so I'm not gonna say much as to that part of the film. Im gonna talk more about development and stuff like that.
To start. this movie is really pretty. the lighting and coloring of the movie really add to the dark gloomy way that Eli is feeling. In the beginning/ middle of the film, she is in all dark colors like green and black and the coloring also has a lot of these colors. Then when we get to the end of the movie when she is willing to actually get better and take the treatment seriously, she is wearing white and light gray, the sun is shining, and the coloring is overall more vibrant. I Really like how clothes are used to portray what stage of healing the characters are in. Luke, is in pretty colorful and fun clothes throughout the film and he gets progressivly more colorful as he continues to gain weight. However when he comes back from the knee doctor, he is in grays and blacks because he feels upset and hopeless. then theres pearl, who is in the infancy of her recovery, so she is seen in more childish clothing (im aware there could be another reason other than metaphorical but bear with me) Then theres Anna, who is wearing bright(er) colors than Eli, but shes wearing sweaters and underneath the sweaters is mostly dark colors, exemplifying how shes feigning recovery but actually still very much bulimic.
The main gripe i have with this film is the ending. It is so rushed and violently different than the rest of the film. She has a dream(?) of some sort and wakes up and suddenly wants to live again. I just feel like it would take more than that to force someone deep into anorexia to want to recover, but again, i dont know. From a film perspective i just think the main conflict of the film was resolved too quickly.
Other than that I really liked this movie. I enjoyed the Non-linear trajectory of the storyline. Meaning that she wasn't constantly getting better throughout the film. She had ups and downs and setbacks, so its pretty accurate to any kind of recovery. I also like that the writers worked with people who have actually struggled with eating disorders, because it is super easy for directors to jsut write what they think would happen instead of getting actual opinions from people whos life this situations relates to, if that makes sense. Overall i think this is a good movie, probably like 3 stars. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who i didnt know well because It is for sure a triggering movie
Well done! You really broke this down well!
